PACE...........Helping you keep pace with technology.........Helping your career keep pace...........

WHAT IS PACE ABOUT?

The Professional Activities Committee for Engineers (PACE) aims to help you maintain your technical vitality and professional development.

We will aim to encourage you to engage in life long learning by bringing training courses and educational opportunities to your attention and where applicable holding seminars and workshops on professional development topics.

We also aim to bring you networking opportunities and opportunities for you to serve the engineering profession in as many ways as possible.

Any suggestions for improvements and new topics to be covered will be welcome.

PACE NEWS AND MEETING NOTICES

Christmas

Best Wishes to members for the Festive Season and for a relaxing holiday break.

Recent Events

The NZIM have published their 2006 Customer Service Programme, so someone is getting us ready for next year's training!

In November, the IEEE North GOLD Group funded a  two night Project Management Workshop run by a former IEEE North Section Chair Loreen Ozolins.  Loreen is an experienced project manager and presenter, which made the workshop an enjoyable and rich learning experience for the twenty people who attended.

2005 PACE Seminar

Dr John Hoskin of Auckland University and Paul de Bazin of Orion Health presented an informative seminar on the subject of University/Industry Joint Project Development on 17 November.  Those who attended gained useful pointers on how academia can work with industry and the benefits gained by both parties in this cooperation.

Consultant Database

The Consultant Database continues to grow,  but as I keep saying, there is always room for more members!

Intellectual Property Brief

See this section for useful articles from Chapman Tripp.

CONSULTANT DATABASE

If you want to make yourself available for Consultancy or Expert Witness services, you should apply for listing in this database!

The Database will hold your professional profile and will make your name available to anyone who searches for a discipline with which you have identified through a Key Phrase. The inquirer will then contact you directly and negotiate a contract for services.

We aim to advertise this service to the initial target audience of Engineering Consultancy Practices during December, or earlier if there are sufficient entries in the Database to make it viable. Beyond the direct advertising of the service, the Database Web Page is already visible to anyone searching the World Wide Web, so anyone listing in the Database could expect inquiries from anywhere in the world.

This is a unique opportunity to present your skills 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to the widest possible group of potential clients at a cost that could not be lower…

This facility has been provided as a free service for all IEEE New Zealand members, who may list indefinitely on proof of current membership.

Non IEEE members may also list, but only for a 12 month period.

The listing will be converted to an indefinite listing if the consultant has taken up IEEE membership.

The Consultant Database is accessed through the IEEE New Zealand North Home Page:

http://www.ieeenorth.org.nz

Look for the link "Consultant Database" and apply for a listing.

If you have any queries please email Peter Over (p [dot] h [dot] over [at] ieee [dot] org)

KEEPING PACE WITH NEW ZEALAND

Throughout the history of the IEEE organisation, focus has been on expanding and enhancing members technical knowledge in all areas of engineering. Within the past 10 years however, the demands and roles of engineers have shifted. As a result of these new pressures, the membership of the IEEE has changed as well.

In order to address this change, an amendment to the original IEEE Constitution was passed assigning a task force, the United States Activities Board (USAB), to:

IEEE Bylaw 311

"... recommend policies and implement programs specifically intended to serve the members...in appropriate nontechnical professional areas of economic, ethical, legislative, and social concern,..."

This amendment subtly changes the focus of the IEEE from a purely technical society to one in which the changing concern of its membership are heard and responded to. The group within the IEEE which facilitates this change is the IEEE United States Activities Board through its Professional Activities Committee for Engineers or PACE Network.

PACE achieves its goal of aiding the professional careers of engineers through a variety of methods:
